Oral Surgery and Implants – The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

PLP staff will explore the topics of patient safety, antimicrobial resistance, dental malpractice, informed consent, scope of practice, and handling adverse outcomes as it applies to oral surgery and implantology. For educational and illustration purposes, the presentation contains numerous PLP case studies.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

• Define and understand the role of patient safety as it pertains to oral surgery and implantology

• Understand the contribution that the dental profession makes to global antimicrobial resistance

• Recognize the scope of practice as it pertains to dentistry

• Understand basic dental malpractice

• Handle an adverse outcome.

  • Ms. Caroline Gaikis
    Ms. Caroline Gaikis
    Legal Advisor, Professional Liability Program, RCDSO

    Caroline Gaikis graduated from Queen’s University where she earned a Bachelor of Science, Honours Biology degree in 2015. Driven by a passion for problem solving and analytical
    thinking, she continued her studies at the Queen’s University Faculty of Law, graduating in 2018.

    Ms. Gaikis articled at a prominent insurance defence law firm in downtown Toronto and joined the firm as an associate in 2019. There, she developed expertise in complex litigation
    matters and represented sophisticated clients in high-stakes disputes, including professional negligence claims. Notably, Ms. Gaikis served as lead trial counsel in a medical
    malpractice case for which her clients, regulated health professionals, received a favourable trial outcome.

    Ms. Gaikis joined the Professional Liability Program in December 2024.

    Dr. Peter Hong
    Assistant Manager – Dental, Professional Liability Program (PLP), RCDSO

    Dr. Hong received his DDS from the University of Toronto, with honours, in 1983. After graduation, he worked in public health, and started a general practice in midtown Toronto, which he owned and operated for over 35 years. He also worked at
    Sunnybrook Hospital as a staff dentist in geriatrics for over 30 years. He has been an instructor at U of T for over 35 years, and currently teaches the Communications course, and the Ethics and Professionalism course to undergraduate dental students.

    Dr. Hong began working for the College on a part-time basis in 2001 as a Monitoring Officer, joined the Professional Liability Program as a Senior Dental Consultant in 2016 and became the Assistant Manager – Dental in 2019.
