Defamation Law

Protecting your Reputation from Online Attacks

Presented by: Dorothy Charach

Reading defamatory remarks about yourself or your business, particularly when they affect your professional reputation, is an incredibly stressful experience. As social media and rating websites continue to increase in popularity, it is an unfortunate reality that not all online feedback will be positive or, more importantly, true.

In this lecture, Dorothy will share her experience launching a defamation claim on behalf of a physician who was defamed repeatedly on RateMDs.com, succeeding on summary judgment, and upholding the decision on appeal. Dorothy will explain the legal elements of defamation and will share some possible strategies to explore when experiencing cyber libel.

Insurance Company Know How and Fee Guides

Presented by: Leslie Redmond
Recognizing that the ODA Suggested Fee Guide is an important part of running a business both ethically and economically, this session is designed so that dentists can accurately and effectively interpret the Guide. Participants will hear best practices in choosing the correct procedure codes, fee development and communications with both patients and third parties.

Record Keeping

Presented by: Greg Anderson

Professional, ethical and legal responsibilities require that a complete chart and record documenting all aspects of each patient’s dental care be maintained. A detailed chart accurately records the patient’s dental condition when first presenting at the office, assists and supports a proper diagnosis and treatment planning, and provides a clear description of the patient’s ongoing care. Good records are also the dentist’s best defence in the event of a formal complaint or lawsuit. In this presentation, RCDSO representatives offer guidance and practical advice in understanding the dental record keeping requirements in Ontario.

Contemporary Periodontal Regeneration

Presented by: Dr. Aleem Manji
As our knowledge and awareness of hard and soft tissue regenerative procedures grow, the question remains – can a tooth be saved or should it be extracted? What tools and technologies do we benefit from today in regenerative medicine that allow us to achieve outcomes we may not have previously thought possible? The presentation will focus on clinical cases treated in everyday private practice and some key points that should be considered in delivering successful patient outcomes.

Reprocessing

Presented by: Shauneen Ryan

Infection Control is an important part of safe patient care. By understanding the infectious disease process and how it is impacted by proper infection control protocol we can eliminate the risk of infection for both patients and practitioners. Participants will obtain the knowledge to properly implement necessary infection prevention and control measures in the dental practice. This lecture consolidates published recommendations from authoritative government agencies as well as regulatory bodies and professional associations.
